After arriving on schedule this Friday 15th February at 0830 GMT at the Multiplast yard in Vannes, Bruno Peyron’s maxi-catamaran Orange could not have her mast unstepped straight away.

Indeed, there was too much wind this morning and the operation has been postponed until tomorrow 16th February. As soon as the mast is unstepped and in the workshop, the Multiplast technical team will carry out an ultrasonic analysis of the mast (a non-destructive test), in order to make sure that the incident hasn’t had an effect on the rest of the mast.

According to Gilles Ollier and Yann Penfornis, their initial observations confirm that the breakage occurred just under the top runner hounds, the mobile cable that supports the masthead to windward and which is tensioned when the boat is sailing under gennaker.

Already, Multiplast has set up a team for starting the repairs. Indeed, Yann Penfornis and Philippe Cahue (workshop manager) confirm that the mast is repairable.

It looks as though the work will consist in joining the broken piece of mast and the rest of the mast by laminating with layers of carbon.
