Francis Joyon and his crew win the Trophée Jules Verne, a sixth record for Multiplast boats on this course

By crossing the finish line of the Trophée Jules Verne (crewed round-the-world record), Francis Joyon and his five teammates cemented an incredible accomplishment, having traversed the globe in just 40 days, 23 hours, 30 minutes and 30 seconds.

40 days 23 hours, 30 minutes and 30 seconds!

40 days is almost half the time of that achieved by Bruno Peyron in 1993 on Commodore Explorer during his victory in the first Jules Verne Trophy. Such was the Joyon team's pace that on one day they averaged a speed of 37.3 knots, hit speeds of up to 48 knots in the Indian Ocean, and finished 2546 miles ahead at the finish line compared to the previous record. These few figures illustrate just how impressive a feat this was, writing the team's name into the history books and highlighting the fabulous performance of the IDEC Sport trimaran.

Yann Penfornis, General Manager of Multiplast said : "First of all, hats off to Francis Joyon, the conductor of this project, but also to Bernard Stamm, Gwénolé Gahinet, Clément Surtel, Sébastien Audigane and Alex Pella - a great performance all round. The Jules Vernes Trophy has been won nine times since it started, with Multiplast having built six of the victorious boats. It goes without saying that our teams feel a real pride in participating in adventures of such heights by building fantastic machines."

Among the forty multihulls produced by Multiplast since 1981, IDEC Sport is probably the winner of the most successful race in the Ocean Race category. Designed by VPLP in 2005 and launched in front of the Vannetais yard on 7 June 2006, this trimaran has since won a first Jules Verne Trophy under the colours of Groupama, two Route du Rhum in the hands of Franck Cammas and Loïck Peyron, the record of 24 hours, the Atlantic record in 2007, and clocked many other times of reference.

Reliability, precision, performance

In collaboration with VPLP or designed and built 100 % at Multiplast, the victories in the Jules Verne Trophy are always significant for the compagny. Dominique Dubois, President of the Carboman Group said : " The history of Jules Verne Trophy has been closely linked to the development of Multiplast since 1993. Six of the nine victories has been won by multihulls from our workshops. The production of racing boats remains strategically important and the production of these multihulls requires us to mix innovation, reliability, precision, performance, a respect for the deadlines and risk control. All of  these qualities and more are prerequisite for competing in the aeronautics sector".

Intense Period

The winter of  2016/2017 is a particulary intense period for Multiplast. In addition, a month ago saw the record of Thomas Coville (Sodebo Ultim') on the same course, albeit sailing solo. And last week saw the delivery of a bridge Volvo 65, the AC50 for the project America's Cup of Groupama Team France and the arrival of Jean-Pierre Dick in the Vendée Globe.
