For the design, the team called on VPLP Design, while\u00a0<strong>Multiplast was entrusted with the construction<\/strong>. The nature of projects meant that this one was pushed back in time, and when Quentin came back to us in January to ask whether we wanted to respond to the tender for this Ultim-sized trimaran,\u00a0<strong>we obviously said that the project interested us.<\/strong>\u00a0First because working again on a boat whose ambition is to take on the great records was something that particularly motivated us, and secondly because\u00a0<strong>the proposed schedule this time fit perfectly into Multiplast\u2019s industrial planning<\/strong>, in the sense that we will have almost completed our Imoca cycle:\u00a0<em>DMG Mori<\/em>\u00a0has already been delivered,\u00a0<em>Paprec<\/em>\u00a0will be nearly finished by the end of the year, and we will be in the final phase of constructing her sistership,\u00a0<em>4CAD<\/em>, Benjamin Dutreux\u2019s boat<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e088411 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e088411\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>How did the project then take shape?<\/strong><br \/>We first met Chad\u00a0<em>(Corning, who heads Team Argo)<\/em>\u00a0<strong>two days after the arrival of\u00a0<em>Sodebo Ultim 3<\/em>\u00a0in the Jules Verne Trophy<\/strong>; it was the ideal moment to talk about large record-breaking boats built at Multiplast, since Thomas Coville and his crew had just earned us the shipyard\u2019s seventh Jules Verne Trophy! Then, throughout the month of February,\u00a0<strong>the team in charge of estimates at Multiplast and Samuel Napoleoni<\/strong>, who is overseeing the project, worked extensively to be able to present a strong proposal at the beginning of March. At the end of that meeting, it was agreed that we would receive an answer by the end of the month,\u00a0<strong>and it arrived just a few hours before April 1st<\/strong>, on March 31st around 9 p.m.! As a side note, I received Chad\u2019s email right in the middle of a Sailorz Film Festival screening in Vannes, during the film about Charlie Dalin\u2019s victorious Vend\u00e9e Globe. I took it as a sign of destiny, and it gave us a wonderful opportunity to offer a beer during the intermission to the VPLP team, who were sitting a few seats ahead of us!<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bb89b4c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bb89b4c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>How attached is Multiplast to this type of boat?<\/strong><br \/>An old ad from the 1980s described\u00a0<strong>Multiplast as being\u00a0<em>&#8220;the shipyard of records&#8221;<\/em><\/strong>. I believe the shipyard has held the Atlantic record six times, and the Jules Verne Trophy has always been part of its history, since we built the first holder,\u00a0<em>Commodore Explorer<\/em>, and the latest,\u00a0<em>Sodebo Ultim 3<\/em>, but also\u00a0<em>Orange<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Geronimo<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Orange II<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Groupama 3<\/em>, which became\u00a0<em>Idec Sport<\/em>, all of which also broke the record. We hope that being chosen by Argo for this project will allow us to\u00a0<strong>continue writing this long history<\/strong>. Gilles Ollier\u00a0<em>(founder of Multiplast)<\/em>, who is one of my mentors, long said that these multihulls were not designed to be sailed solo because a single skipper cannot exploit 100% of the machine\u2019s potential. The advantage of working on a crewed boat from the design stage is that the human factor will not be limiting, as can be the case for an Ultim that has to race the Route du Rhum. Everything is designed around the crew, and that is incredibly enjoyable!<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0b2c049 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0b2c049\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>How will you organize the teams to build this trimaran?<\/strong><br \/>As I mentioned, it is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/fr.linkedin.com\/in\/samuel-napol%C3%A9oni-99326270\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Samuel Napoleoni<\/a>, who worked on the AC75 of the French K-Challenge team and\u00a0has just completed\u00a0<em>DMG Mori<\/em>, who is taking charge of the project. He obviously will not be alone because there are many sub-projects on a boat like this: the crossbeams, the central hull, the floats. Twenty-five years ago, on a boat like\u00a0<em>Orange II\u00a0<\/em>for example, we designed the plans, the platform, the appendages, the mast, the boom, the beams, absolutely everything! Today, this is a sector in which many players have specialized, and on our side,\u00a0<strong>we are delighted to focus solely on manufacturing the platform<\/strong>, which is already a very major undertaking. We are going to fully commit ourselves for two years, knowing that since construction will not begin before December, we have time to anticipate things properly. This is also one of the strengths of this program, which is not built around a race start date. Such a schedule<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>allows VPLP, the designers, to<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>properly plan the work for a year and then<strong>\u00a0allows Multiplast to build calmly during the following two years.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-25f0fa4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"25f0fa4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Will you have to adapt your tools for the construction of this future\u00a0<em>Argo<\/em>?<\/strong><br \/>No, because of our history,\u00a0<strong>we already have extensive resources in place<\/strong>. I believe that in total, we have built 25 hulls for this type of boat\u00a0<em>(central hulls and floats for trimarans and catamarans)<\/em>. So our production tools already exist, and such a construction does not require building another hall.\u00a0<strong>However, it does require very precise space organization<\/strong>, because a multihull of this size takes up a great deal of room, but we are now highly experienced with this type of process.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3b61491 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"3b61491\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-833867d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"833867d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">IN BRIEF<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9a9b0aa elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9a9b0aa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>RACING.<\/strong>\u00a0The winter of 2025-2026 provided Multiplast with the opportunity to add to\u00a0<strong>its record book<\/strong>:\u00a0<em>Sodebo Ultim 3<\/em>, built in Vannes, got things underway at the end of January by claiming the\u00a0<strong>Jules Verne Trophy<\/strong>\u00a0in 40 days, 10 hours, and 45 minutes, improving by just under 13 hours the time set in 2017 by\u00a0<em>Idec Sport<\/em>. The following day, the latter, with Alexia Barrier and seven female sailors on board, completed the same course in 57 days, 21 hours, and 20 minutes, setting the\u00a0<strong>first benchmark time for an all-female crew<\/strong>\u00a0and marking another historic moment for this trimaran launched by Multiplast in 2006 (two-time Jules Verne Trophy holder, three-time Route du Rhum winner). Finally,\u00a0<em>MACSF<\/em>, the former\u00a0<em>Geronimo<\/em>\u00a0launched in 2001 and also built by Multiplast, with Guirec Soud\u00e9e at the helm, broke\u00a0<strong>the reverse around-the-world record<\/strong>\u00a0in 94 days, 21 hours, and 58 minutes, with the Breton becoming the first person to complete this course on a multihull.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4d57358 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4d57358\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>RACING.\u00a0<\/strong>After more than 40,000 hours of manufacturing,\u00a0<strong><em>DMG Mori<\/em><\/strong>, Kojiro Shiraishi\u2019s new Imoca\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/42fvnm88\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was delivered in mid-March<\/a>\u00a0to the DMG Mori Sailing Team and will be officially unveiled on June 4 in Lorient. According to Jeremy Mazzolini, head of the design office,\u00a0<em>&#8220;it was interesting to develop this complex structure with Kojiro\u2019s team, and we were also very pleased to collaborate once again with Guillaume Verdier, who lived up to his reputation as an architect who is innovative in both shapes and structural optimization.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0977ce3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0977ce3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>TRANSPORT.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong><em>Orient Express Corinthian<\/em><\/strong>, the very first luxury cruise ship from the Accor Group, equipped with three SolidSail rigs and sails made of fiberglass and carbon fiber panels manufactured at Multiplast,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/2p9hu64w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was inaugurated<\/a>\u00a0on April 29 at the Chantiers de l&#8217;Atlantique site in Saint-Nazaire. During the sea trials, the vessel reached a speed of 12 knots under sail alone, without engine assistance, and the first commercial voyages are currently beginning in the Mediterranean.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5b8ba31 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5b8ba31\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>AERONAUTICS.<\/strong>\u00a0Multiplast has just completed the construction of a new series of\u00a0<strong>six bellmouths<\/strong>, air intakes ordered last autumn by Safran Aero Boosters and intended for the LEAP aircraft engine test benches used by Airbus and Boeing (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.multiplast.eu\/en\/newsletter-2024-12\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">see our December 2024 newsletter<\/a>).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ddd15f1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ddd15f1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>DEFENSE.<\/strong>\u00a0Having been involved for more than 15 years in the manufacture of\u00a0<strong>radomes<\/strong>\u00a0for Thales (radar panels designed to protect them from environmental damage,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.multiplast.eu\/en\/newsletter-2024-12\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">see our December 2024 newsletter<\/a>), Multiplast is about to complete the production of the hundredth piece in this series for Ground Master 200 radars.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-41ca71a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"41ca71a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>RACING.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong><em>11th Hour Racing<\/em><\/strong>, the former\u00a0<em>Malizia<\/em>\u00a0of Boris Herrmann (built at Multiplast), now sailed by Italian-American Francesca Clapcich,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/yajy64t3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was relaunched at the end of March<\/a>\u00a0in her new colors. She finished fifth on May 8 in her very first solo Imoca race, the 1000 Race. In the same race, Corentin Horeau took second place aboard\u00a0<em>MACSF<\/em>, the former\u00a0<em>Paprec Ark\u00e9a<\/em>\u00a0of Yoann Richomme, launched by Multiplast in February 2023.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0de62ff elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0de62ff\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>AERONAUTICS.<\/strong>\u00a0Construction of the very first float for the future\u00a0<strong>FF72<\/strong>\u00a0water bomber aircraft on behalf of Positive Aviation (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.multiplast.eu\/en\/newsletter-2025-05\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">see our May 2025 newsletter<\/a>)\u00a0is underway. The composite parts of this first float will then be sent to Airbus\u2019 Technocentre in Nantes, where assembly will take place. The Ocean Fifty skippered by S\u00e9bastien Rogues and built by Multiplast in 2022-2023 made a flying start to the\u00a0<strong>Ocean Fifty Series<\/strong>\u00a0season by winning Acts 1 and 2 in early May in Sainte-Maxime and then Ajaccio. It consists of a large carbon-epoxy panel engraved with\u00a0a giant figure eight representing the path of the sun across the sky throughout the year, as well as its trajectories during the solstices and the equinox.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d397b22 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d397b22\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em>&#8220;It makes it possible to\u00a0<strong>tell the time, the day, and the month at the moment of solar noon<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/em>explains\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/sylvainchaty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sylvain Chaty<\/a>, Vice President Delegate for Culture, Science and Society at Paris Cit\u00e9\u00a0University and an astrophysicist by training.\u00a0<em>When the sun is low in winter, the sunspot appears rather high up, and when it is high, the spot appears lower down. The idea was to create\u00a0<strong>an object that is at once aesthetic, educational, and historical,\u00a0<\/strong>linking back to the first sundials dating from the time of the Sumerians, 5,000 or 6,000 years ago.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d471ee1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d471ee1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>If Multiplast won the tender,\u00a0<em>&#8220;it was largely thanks to<strong>\u00a0the choice of material, carbon, because it does not expand with heat and therefore maintains the meridian\u2019s precision<\/strong>\u00a0throughout the year, but also thanks to their \u201cliving heritage company&#8221; label, which aligns well with the values of the University,\u00a0<\/em>continues Sylvain Chaty<em>. According to our research, this would also be the first meridian ever made of carbon, since traditionally they are either engraved in stone or painted.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9c76ccd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9c76ccd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>On the Multiplast side,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/fr.linkedin.com\/in\/jeremy-mazzolini-9a110592\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">J\u00e9r\u00e9my Mazzolini<\/a>, head of the design office, is delighted with this collaboration, which enabled the company to broaden its expertise:\u00a0<em>&#8220;<strong>It was interesting to understand the technical and astronomical challenges of this ancient object<\/strong>\u00a0in order to meet its precision requirements\u00a0through the use of a relatively modern material such as carbon and fairly advanced engineering techniques.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bba509a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bba509a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>After scanning the facade of the Grands Moulins building in Paris, the Multiplast team had\u00a0<strong>a large carbon panel machined at\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ouest-composites.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Ouest Composites<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(a member of the Carboman group, like Multiplast) using its large-scale numerically controlled machine<em>.\u00a0<\/em>Then, based on the coordinates of the analemma projection (the figure-eight path followed by the sun across the sky throughout the year) calculated by\u00a0<strong>Denis Savoie<\/strong>, astrophysicist and world expert on meridians and sundials,\u00a0<em>&#8220;<strong>we created the digital model of the meridian in our 3D design tools<\/strong>,&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>specifies J\u00e9r\u00e9my Mazzolini.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2e726af elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2e726af\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Installed in April, the fixings had to be adjusted with precision, he continues:\u00a0<em>&#8220;The parallel alignment with the facade and<\/em>\u00a0<em>the vertical positioning of the piece require\u00a0<strong>millimeter-precise adjustment to guarantee the accuracy of the meridian<\/strong>.
