How Multiplast ventured into drone manufacturing<\/h3>

Multiplast is completing the manufacturing of seven\u00a0drones<\/strong> for Boreal<\/strong>, which could lead to medium-scale production.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

This project began at the end of 2025, when Boreal<\/a> and a European player in the defence sector joined forces to respond to a call for expressions of interest from the French Directorate General of Armaments (DGA) for the construction of a long-range drone (over 500 km). “Our proposal was not selected, but the partnership had worked so well that we decided to launch our program anyway, we were convinced that we had a differentiated offering<\/strong>“<\/em>, explains Pierre Ezerzere<\/a>, Boreal’s Development Director, a company based near Toulouse and specialized in drone manufacturing since 1998.<\/p>

Among them,\u00a0the Boreal<\/a>, specialized in surveillance and reconnaissance, which served as the basis for the new project<\/strong>. To produce this drone, Boreal needed to rely on external resources: “Historically, we have built them, but in a rather artisanal way, in the sense that production was limited to a few units per year, <\/em>continues Pierre Ezerzere. For this new project, the target production rate was higher, <\/strong>which required scaling up production, so we needed partners to manufacture the airframe.”<\/em><\/p>

Multiplast was chosen<\/strong>. “For several reasons,<\/em> explains Boreal’s Development Director. First, because I saw before me people capable of producing unique and highly complex large-scale parts<\/strong>, such as Imoca boats or the floats for Positive Aviation <\/em>(see our article<\/a>), whose management I also know very well. Secondly, because they demonstrated a very high level of proactivity<\/strong>: even before we had signed the contract, they were able to provide a resource to carry out pre-design work. Finally, Multiplast shared our ambition to ramp up production.”<\/em><\/p>

In charge of this project on behalf of the Vannes-based company, Samuel Napol\u00e9oni\u00a0explains the challenge<\/strong>: “It was really interesting, because it amounted to an industrial application of techniques more commonly associated with model making or gliders, with a <\/em>composite arrangement that had to be both lightweight and strong<\/em>. At Multiplast, this is the first time we have produced a sandwich structure <\/strong><\/em>this thin<\/em><\/strong>, and it<\/em> brought to light all kinds of small implementation and manufacturing challenges that pushed us beyond our usual practices.”<\/em><\/p>

The first prototype was delivered in July<\/strong> by Multiplast, less than two months after the yard\u00a0had received the exterior design drawings and started manufacturing the moulds. The six pre-production drones were then manufactured straight away. The result has been particularly satisfying for the customer: “We carried out static tests to check that the wing would not break under load, and they went very well, same thing with the fuselage, it is rare in the drone world to get almost the entire structural part right on the first try<\/strong><\/em>, points out Pierre Ezerzere. In addition, Multiplast stayed within budget and on schedule, and the fact that they dedicated a project manager, a team and facilities to us enabled us to carry out development under very reassuring conditions.”<\/em><\/p>

What are the ambitions for this project now? “For now, this is an initial pilot batch, but the objective is to scale up production in line with demand<\/strong>“<\/em>, he replies.\u00a0Samuel Napol\u00e9oni adds: “We are able to meet much higher demand, particularly by duplicating the moulds<\/strong> to manufacture two or three drones simultaneously.”<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
